
About Kenya Water Towers Agency
Kenya Water Towers Agency (KWTA) is a state corporation under the Ministry of Environment and Forestry established under Executive Legal Notice No. 27 of 2012. The mandate of the Agency is to coordinate and oversee the protection, rehabilitation, conservation, and sustainable management of all critical water towers in Kenya. Currently, there are eighteen (18) gazetted water towers, five (5) of which are major water towers. Water Towers offers a wide range of services, including provisioning, regulating, supporting, and cultural activities. Water towers influence river flow, flood mitigation, water storage, water purification, groundwater recharge, soil erosion and siltation reduction, biodiversity preservation, carbon sequestration, carbon sinks, and microclimate regulation. As a result, conserving, restoring, and managing water towers sustainably aligns with Kenya's commitment to the Paris Climate Change Agreement.
