
President Dr William Ruto has signed agreements totalling KSh350 billion while on a state visit of Japan. The agreements will provide funding for initiatives and plans in fields targeted at improving the nation's economic situation among them; the Mombasa Gateway in Mombasa that is valued at Ksh 260 billion and the Dongo Kundu infrastructure ecosystem.
Additionally, it was decided between President Dr. William Ruto and Prime Minister Fumio Kushida that Kenya would issue a KSh40 billion Samurai bond in Japan to fund infrastructure and energy projects. A non-Japanese firm issuing bonds in Tokyo denominated in yen is known as a Samurai bond. However, the bond must comply with Japanese laws.
Kenya also obtained KSh30 billion for heavy machinery and mechanized assets from the Japan Bank for International Cooperation. Ksh15 billion will be given to the Olkaria Geothermal Development Project. Additionally, Japan would donate KSh1 billion to support the manufacturing of medical oxygen for different hospitals.
Kenya will get KSh320 million in humanitarian help from the UN for individuals impacted by the recent floods brought on by El Nino. MoUs on cooperation in the ICT, banking, health, and security sectors are among the other agreements.
A Defence Cooperation Agreement was also inked to fortify the defence cooperation between the two nations. Kenya is becoming the first nation in Africa to sign a defence agreement with Japan.
The President expressed gratitude to Japan for helping to complete the National Rice Masterplan and Phase II of the Mwea Irrigation Scheme noting that that the irrigation scheme will play a hand in addressing food.
