Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA) Opens Avocado Season for Kenya's Exporters

The Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA) has officially announced the opening of the 2025/2026 avocado export season for sea shipments, effective 2nd April 2026. This decision follows a field survey confirming improved fruit maturity across key production zones after a period of restriction.

The season will commence with harvesting for export via sea shipment on 2nd April 2026, followed by the start of mandatory packhouse inspections for all fresh produce on 7th April 2026. The harvesting of avocados intended for oil processing will begin on 30th April 2026, as these require higher maturity indices.

To safeguard the quality and reputation of Kenyan avocados in international markets, the AFA has issued strict compliance guidelines. All exporters were required to submit their list of registered Horticultural Produce Marketing Agents (HPMA) or suppliers by 30th March 2026. Additionally, exporters must apply for packhouse inspections at least three days prior to shipment.

In terms of transportation, harvested fruits must be handled and transported in crates. The use of open pickup trucks or “Probox” vehicles is strictly prohibited and may result in the revocation of export licenses. The Authority has also emphasized strict adherence to maturity standards, warning that any exporter or processor found handling immature fruits will face immediate license revocation.

Processors and exporters are therefore strongly encouraged to comply fully with these regulations to ensure the production and export of high-quality avocados that meet international market standards.
